In an ideal world we’d be able to click our fingers and presto, you and all your belongings will have moved home and that would be the end of that, but unfortunately for us we have to go through the rigamarole of packing all our stuff up ourselves before gearing off.
At this point the temptation to just get on with it and throw all your stuff in random boxes and hope for the best may seem strong, but in this article we’ll be arguing that that’s not the way to go, that by bearing in mind a few top tips your move can actually be a stress-free one; it isn’t as farfetched as it sounds!
Plan effectively
It’s all well and good if you’re the kind of person who likes to crack on with assembling the Ikea furniture without reading the instructions, but jumping in head first when packing up your stuff to move home can actually end up taking up more time in the long run than were you to stop and plan your packing beforehand.
Ensure you have the right materials to pack your belongings away in: that you acquire boxes that are sturdy enough and maneuverable enough; that you are well-stocked with labels and tape, and the scissors are to hand too; and that you have adequate stock of packaging fillers such as bubble wrap to protect your goods. You should also plan how you’ll be organising all your belongings in the various boxes, allowing you to keep a good idea of where all your stuff is during the move.
Take your time
Don’t forget to take your time with your packing. Rushing about will only serve to stress you out and make it more likely that you’ll forget things, make mistakes, and generally make you more irritable on the whole. Moving home can be very stressful, but only if you let it get to you. We’ll let you in on a secret: it doesn’t have to get to you!
Label everything
Be sure you don’t get caught out accidentally misplacing things or forgetting where you packed them. As we said above, you should be meticulous with where and how you pack your things, but remembering where you put every little thing is doubtless going to be difficult regardless, at least without labels it would be. Effectively labelling your boxes will save you eons of time down the road.
Organise hazardous materials
If you’re packing hazardous materials to take with you then you need to pack these separately from the rest of your belongings. Things such as bleach, oils and paints absolutely must be kept apart if you are to ensure that your property gets to the other side in one piece. Should anything go wrong during the move and these materials were to leak, they could seriously damage the contents of other boxes, and packing them separately is but one way you can avoid this.
Pack the loo roll last
Our final top tip seems like a really mundane one but it’ll save you from having to deal with a sticky situation on moving day! If you pack the loo roll last not only will you be covered in your own home should you need to use the facilities, when you get to your new place the toilet paper will be one of the first things you unpack, making this top tip a safety net for both sides of the fence.
