Moving home is about as stressful as it gets, but moving overseas requires a whole new level of preparation. Besides all the packing, there are a hundred and one logistical tasks that we have to take care of, so it’s vital that we’re organised before the big day arrives. In light of this, this month, the team at Metro Removals are on hand to walk you through the dos and don’ts of preparing for your overseas move.
DO de-clutter your home
Normally, when we move home we tend to make a point of streamlining our belongings; it’s a good time to take stock and reflect on what we really need. For overseas moves, this is even more important. So, before your trip, take some time to work out what you really need.
DO check your health care options
Once you’ve moved, you’ll have to organise your healthcare. It might be the case that you’re covered by the NHS, so this is worth checking. However, if not, it may be that you’ll need to organise private health insurance. On top of this, you’ll need to alert your GP that you’ve moved, and also organise any injections if the destination is much further afield.
DO arrange visas
Without a visa, you will not be able to move to your country of choice – it’s as simple as that. So, it’s absolutely vital that you organise visas and other relevant documentation before you leave. Some movers may be supplied visas by their new overseas employers, if this is the case, it’s still worth contacting the local embassy for your destination country to make sure they are aware.
DON’T forget about storage
If you’ve packed all the belongings that you’re willing to take (or that your budget will allow) but you still have leftover items, you don’t necessarily have to sell them, there’s always the option of putting them into storage back in the UK. This way, you avoid extra costs without having to truly part ways with those items.
DON’T forget to alert certain bodies to your new address
After, or ideally before, your move, you’ll have to alert certain government bodies about your change of address. These include HM Revenue & Customs, National Insurance Contributions Office and the DWP.
DON’T forget to book your removal well in advance
Usually, an international removal company will need around one month’s notice to allow them ample to time to get ready. However, do pay attention to the time of year – summer is particularly busy.
